Happy Book Birthday to Tony Cliff and Delilah Dirk and the King’s Shilling!
More frequently than I’d like, in publishing, we hear publishing professionals telling us, ‘women can’t be heroes in this historical book — because women weren’t heroes in history.’ This displays that these people have an inaccurate understanding of history — but still, there aren’t a whole lot of action-adventure books set in our past where the woman is the character who has the sword.
I’m so glad that Tony Cliff’s Delilah Dirk and the King’s Shilling challenges this stereotype with a wonderful female hero — Delilah Dirk. And this book engages with the typical female behavior at the time, making one of her greatest challenges dealing with wearing a dress and behaving at public parties and in high society — something she finds as challenging (or more!) than hitting people with swords.
This story reveals the complexity of historical female heroes! And it’s wonderful
